Establishment is the Key

The first priority with any crop is to develop a good root system (establishment). What grows above the ground is a reflection of how well the root system is developing below. To promote vigorous development of root systems, we should focus on the nutrients which influence root development and apply these early in the growth phase of the crop. Later on, the focus shifts to achieve optimum grain yield and quality. Energy and nutrition for early establishment is provided by the nutrient reserves in the seed and then development of lateral roots allow the young plant to explore “hunt” for its nutrients from the soil.

Establishment is the Key

The nutrient reserves in a seed can vary quite significantly, as they can within the soil. This can therefore effect the rate and uniformity of establishment across the crop. Seed treatment is the earliest treatment opportunity available and the only one that can really influence establishment. In applying the micronutrient directly where it is required it can be ensured that every seedling has sufficient reserves to optimise establishment and early root development. Alternative applications such as granules or liquids applied to the soil cannot benefit the crop until the lateral roots have developed and made contact with the nutrient.

YaraVita Zintrac is one of the seed treatment products supplied by Yara. YaraVita Zintrac is compatible with commonly used seed treatments and can be applied at the same time, making application simple. For more information, click here.
