Calcium is the key to growing healthy lettuce plants

By: David McRae

Calcium is essential for healthy lettuce that is crunchier with longer shelf life. Starting calcium applications early when new cells are developing helps to get your lettuce off to a good start. Ensuring that the young lettuce leaves are well supplied with calcium is essential to reduce or eliminate tipburn. Calcium moves with the transpiration water and inner leaves transpire much less water than wrapper leaves. Supplying soluble calcium with YaraLiva is key to improving lettuce quality.

Calcium uptake is boosted when nitrogen is applied as nitrate. YaraLiva Calcinit supplies balanced nitrate-N (15.5%) and soluble calcium (19%) to promote rapid response to nitrogen and enhanced uptake of calcium. YaraLiva Nitrabor is another option with 15.4% N and 18.3% calcium.

Fertigating with YaraLiva Calcinit as the primary nitrogen source will help reduce or eliminate calcium deficiency that results in tipburn, reduced shelf life and poor quality lettuce
